What seemed to be an amazing story soon became a darker tale of child abuse as Richard's father would isolate him from all interactions with peers or friends so that he could train non-stop every day (and later was sent to jail for physically abusing his wife and son). Richard's physique was impressive -- almost freakishly so given his age -- but the toll it took on his childhood is something he never recovered from.
