Everybody wants to see their book idea transformed into a bestseller. After all, those months (maybe years) that you spent trying to come up with the best plot, fantastic characters, and exciting twists, it is understandable that you want to see it giving something back to you in the form of massive sales and encouraging reviews.
But, as you know, most of the books written never get to be published, leave alone to become a bestseller. And this is because, to achieve it, it takes a bit more than just good writing and constant hoping as you will see below.
First, write something good
Yes, let’s start with the basic and obvious. If you want that your book becomes a bestseller, you need to make sure that it is a good one. If your idea is just more of the same, poorly written, or pretentious, there is no way for you to get it to sell anywhere in the world.
Plus, no agent or publisher will be interested in publishing a story that isn’t valuable. And if you decide to be stubborn and self-publish it, you will be wasting your money as well. So take your time improving your idea and making sure that what you are writing is something worthwhile so to increase your chances that people will read it.
Secondly, finish your book
The world is full of wannabe writers who have never finished their books. They have this great idea in their minds and get frustrated every time they walk into a bookshop, but they don’t seem to have the commitment or the energy to complete their own work.
As you probably know, a bestseller doesn’t get itself ready overnight, but it does become real one working day after the other. Even if you can only write 100 words per day, you will eventually get it done. Just don’t forget that the first draft always requires a second, and maybe a third draft, so don’t stop halfway through it.
Invest in your personal brand
If you want that your book gets noticed, you will have to invest in your personal brand. Yes, this can be a problem for many writers, a group famous for being reserved and enjoying solitude. But, considering the competition out there, you will have to stand out somehow.
Of course, you don’t need to be 24/7 on social media. But being active on the main social media networks, such as Facebook and Twitter can help you to promote your work and expertise. Your readers will also want to know who you are and what you stand for.
And if you aren’t sure where to draw a line about it, just check how famous writers, such as Neil Gaiman and Stephen King, deal with their social media accounts.
Understand what the market wants
There are two ways to become an author: or you just write your books as if they were something that you would like to read yourself, or you write them thinking about getting done something that a specific audience wants to read. Both ways you might be able to have a bestseller in your hands, so it is more likely a personal choice at the end of the day.
Some writers will say that worrying about the market is something you should never do as it will just kill your creativity and you have no idea of what it wants for real anyway. The publishing industry is a very foggy one, and it seems very hard for writers to understand the requirements and expectations. Sometimes, a story that you would consider as worthless becomes the latest trend and that is it.
But, having said that, if your goal is to become the next bestseller’s author, you should at least try to understand what your target audience is looking for, in the sense of which stories they would like to read next.
The Bottom Line
There is no guarantee that your book will turn into a bestseller. Even if it is perfect, the market might not be prepared for it (check how many authors have become famous only centuries after their deaths) for instance. But it doesn’t mean that you should lose hope. Many writers have managed to pull this off recently, and so can you.
Just make sure that your initial idea is captivating, and that it brings something fresh and exciting to your target audience. And work on something that will make you proud, and your readers interested in buying your book – and the next one as well. This way you are bound to see your name on bestselling books’ list sooner than you think.
