    The Key to Caring: Know Your Audience

    You’re an author, or maybe a publicist, and you want your book to get some good reviews from BookTubers. Where do you start? Get to know your audience.

    As you know, every book has a target audience. Find that audience here on BookTube. I’ve said it before, you’re sure to find someone in the BookTube community that fits into your market. Start to watch videos, comment, interact, get to know the people you want reading your books. The more comfortable and real the relationships between readers and writers becomes (and I’ll talk about this more later), the more genuine reviews will be.

    But watch out, as in every community there are freeloaders. Beware of the rare and few BookTubers who might just be in it for the books. While I admit this is not a common practice among BookTubers, you will be able to tell the intentions of the reviewer if you have gotten to know them, seen their videos, and followed them for a time.

    Are the people you want to review your books regularly reviewing other books? Are they consistent? Are they fair? Do they read critically? These are just some of the questions you should ask yourself before picking who you want to send your book to for review. Make sure to give people who are genuinely interested in your book a chance, even if it’s their first review. Remember, we all have to start somewhere. Similarly, reward those who are good at what they do for all their hard work. My friend Emily, a book blogger over at ohmagichour.com is a regular and devoted reviewer, who writes excellently and consistently about books for review.

    With social media’s strong presence today, it’s almost guaranteed that BookTubers will have other forms that they utilize for their channel. Check to see if a BookTuber has a Twitter account, maybe a separate written book blog or Tumblr, a Goodreads profile, etc. Add them and watch their interaction in the community as they talk about books and share them with their followers.

    BookTubers are willing to review books if they see genuine intent on the author’s behalf, just as you as an author want to see genuine interest on the behalf of the reviewer. In the next section I’ll discuss how you can do just that and give examples of authors that are building their brand and relationships in the BookTuber community.
