Lying works better when you throw in embarrassing details, because people think to themselves, why would you embarrass yourself if it wasn't the truth? For example, just calling in to say that you are ill could raise suspicions, but saying that you had an "accident" in your pants on the way to work and now need to very carefully walk back home will convince anyone.
