Description: This instrument consists of 30 questions, 15 pertaining to the now and 15 relating to one year from now. For each section, statements will be rated from 1 to 5 as to how true they are. The assessment will produce two graphics of your results and interpretation from the author. You can take the test up to five times within a 12-month period and compare your results.

The challenge I hope you will take away from reading this book is how to apply this foresight to provoke your own insights and actions—to make yourself a better leader.

I am suggesting a process you can use to develop yourself as a leader and improve your readiness for the future.

The Future Readiness Self-Assessment is designed so you can use it on your own, but it is also a great conversation starter for workshops and team-building efforts. For a team in workshop settings, you can use this online self-assessment as advance preparation for an in-person or online workshop—or as a follow-up. I often use it with groups before my talks or workshops.

The Future Readiness Self-Assessment is a chance to reflect on yourself and your leadership—given the external future forces of the next decade.

This is your chance to assess your own leadership literacies and skills—and test them against the future that I describe in The New Leadership Literacies and Leaders Make the Future . You don’t have to agree with my forecast to find this exercise provocative and useful. In fact, the most useful forecasts are often the ones you don’t like, the forecasts that make you feel uncomfortable and queasy.

There are no right answers, but every leadership team should have a mix of these future leadership skills if it is to engage successfully with the external future forces of the next decade. Ideally, all members of the team will share all five of the future leadership literacies.

As you consider the ten-year forecast inside the book jacket (and described in narrative form in the Introduction) of Leaders Make the Future , ask yourself which waves of change you will choose to ride—but at least consider which waves of change you should avoid being hit by. In The New Leadership Literacies , Chapters 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 explore the future of each of the five new leadership literacies. Meet the Author


Visit Author Page - Robert Johansen

Bob Johansen has been helping organizations around the world prepare for and shape the future for more than thirty years. The New Leadership Literacies is Bob's eleventh book. He is a frequent keynote speaker for large groups and leads a wide range of workshops with rising-star leaders.

As a distinguished fellow at IFTF, Bob draws on his training in the social sciences and his extensive experience at the edges of multiple disciplines as he interacts with top leaders of business, government, and nonprofit organizations to encourage thoughtful consideration of the long-term future. His most recent book, the second edition of Leaders Make the Future: Ten New Leadership Skills for an Uncertain Age, has contributions from the Center for Creative Leadership. Connect Consulting Group named this book on change management and leadership as the best business book of 2012. Bob has done workshops based on his books at a wide range of corporations, including P&G, Kellogg's, Disney, Intel, Walmart, Syngenta, Johnson & Johnson, UPS, McKinsey, General Mills, and McDonald's. Major universities, nonprofits, and churches also use his books.

Born in Geneva, Illinois, Bob holds a BS from the University of Illinois, where he attended on a basketball scholarship and channeled his unrealistic desire to be a professional athlete. He received a PhD from Northwestern University, where he was introduced to the Internet (then called the ARPANet) as it was just coming to life. In addition, Bob has a divinity school degree from Crozer Theological Seminary, where he began his lifelong interest in world religions, ethics, and things spiritual. Bob was the president of the Institute for the Future for eight years and founded its program of research on emerging technology horizons.

Bob is married to Robin B. Johansen, an attorney practicing constitutional law. They have two children and three grandchildren.

Future Readiness Self-Assessment

We are now in the midst of a threshold decade: our natural, business, organizational, and social systems are in a period that I refer to as a SCRAMBLE. The scramble will have lots of unintended consequences and new opportunities for innovation—if leaders are ready.

Self-interest will not be enough: leaders will need to broaden their perspectives on winning to include the larger systems of which they are a part. Business leaders will still need to drive revenue, increase efficiency, and resolve conflicts, but traditional financial mandates won’t be enough to succeed over the long term. Leaders must also embrace the shared assets and opportunities around them—not just the individual takeaways that will reward them or their companies alone. Leaders must both make money and make common cause with others to grow overall markets and economies.

This will be a very tough decade to be a leader, but it will also be a very exciting and meaningful time to lead, with the right set of literacies, skills, and expectations.

In some sense, we will all need to be our own leaders. Fortunately, virtual leadership tools in the emerging world of cloud computing are making new strategies for smart-mob organizing possible just at the time when it is becoming most necessary to work together in new ways and at great distances.

I believe that the more connected we are, the safer, freer, and more powerful we will be. But there will be frightening downsides that are equally true: the more connected we are, the more dangerous it will become.

Leaders will need to make new links and organize people for action—yet also protect against dangerous hyper connectivity like we see in global financial spasms. It is good news that we are more connected than ever before, but leaders must now learn to lead in ways that make full use of the new connectivity of cloud-served supercomputing—while minimizing its considerable risks.
